The fundamental question posed is what kind of buildings we want as the first threshold in the lives of our children after their homes. With this in mind, we propose a building that is extroverted and adaptable to the future needs of the nursery. We suggest an urban “mountain” of knowledge and learning. The volume of the building creates terraces around the perimeter, and the circulation is positioned externally, creating a playful atmosphere.
The spatial and visual connection with greenery is continuous as one moves through the building. Our objective is to cultivate the abilities of the users both inside and outside. The aim is for nature to also play the role of the teacher, educating the children daily. The facades recede, creating semi-outdoor spaces around the perimeter of the building. Thus, the building is protected and has a shaded courtyard for the summer months.
The external staircase path unifies the planted terraces, which culminate on the roof of the nursery, where a semi-outdoor space is located. This area can function as a garden for the children and can also host some of the nursery’s events.
The proposed circulation is arranged in such a way as to free up the floor plan from stairwells and elevators, making the interior spaces more flexible. Additionally, it provides independent access to the two levels for both infants and toddlers, facilitating access for children, parents, and staff. This also makes the building more manageable in terms of security and allows for flexible future uses, addressing potential financial challenges.
